| Mulubinba Lodge |
Mulubinba Lodge is located in East Perisher, out near the cross country trails. It's about a 700 metre walk to the centre of Perisher Village and a short 10 minute ski to the trails.
During Summer you may drive to the lodge and park overnight on the road. Well, we think you can. The board is still seeking clarification from the National Parks as to where exactly we can park.
Note that the National Parks yearly pass is now $190. Daily rates are $16
per day, except during the ski season when it is $27 per day.
Drive into Perisher Village, past the church and the fire sation on your left and take the next turn left just past the Man from Snowy River Hotel, right opposite the Skitube terminal.
Turn right past the Marritz lodge and go right to the end of the road, past the Swagman. Mulubinba Lodge is up the hill to your left.
During the official ski season, from the June long weekend through to the October long weekend, and sometimes longer, the roads in Perisher are closed. Do not attempt to drive up to the lodge. The National Parks officers will book you, and the fine is in excess of $300.
During Winter, park at Bullocks Flat (on the Thredbo road) and take the Skitube up the hill. During 2007 an open return (valid for 8 days) is $55 for adults and $37 for children. Note that you cannot take luggage on the Skitube during peak periods (morning uphill and afternoon downhill).
Only the very hardy make it under their own steam from the Skitube terminal to the lodge. The less adventurous take the Hans Oversnow snowcat from the Skitube terminal right to the front door of the lodge. The charge is $12 or so each - this can depend on how many bags and boxes of food and wine you have.
Access to the formal cross country trails is up the valley behind the lodge. Head in a North Easterly direction, following the poles indicating the race route. About 500 metres away at the top of the valley you will find the 5k/7.5k/10k trail.
The trail head to Porquipine and the back way to Charlottes is about 200 metres away, down near the water supply dam, just past the Swagman and over the bridge.
Of course if you don't want to go formal or to Porcupine then just head over that way. The great part is you can ski wherever you find snow.
It is usually possible to ski down to the Skitube, either down the road, possibly below Marritz, or up over the top past Narraburra Lodge. From the Skitube it is a short walk across the bridge to front valley. It is a good idea to purchase your lift pass at the Skitube terminal on your way through to avoid the crowd at the Perisher Centre ticket office.
In the evening the more hardy (or those who have spent too much time at the Man) will walk home. A much better idea is to use Hans Oversnow who provide a Skiers Special right to the front door of the lodge for $6. Ask Iggy at the Hans counter, they run between 4:00pm and 6:00pm. Don't let them see any groceries or booze - this service is for skiers and skis/boards.
